Ionization energy (EI): When an electron is removed from the outermost shell of an isolated gaseous atom the amount of energy required is known as ionization energy.

When the first electron is removed from the neutral atom the required energy is known as the first ionization energy. When the second electron is removed from the +1 charged ion the required energy is known as second ionization energy and so on.
