A horizontal partitions (often called sharding). Each division in this technique serves as a separate data store, but they all share the same structure. Each partition, or "shard," contains a particular subset of the data, such as all the orders for a particular group of clients.

Vertical partitioning, on the other hand, goes further and divides columns even after normalisation. Since rows are divided by their columns, this sort of partitioning is also known as "row splitting" and may be done explicitly or implicitly.
