![For the reaction 2H₂ + O₂ --> 2H₂O you should have
found that hydrogen's oxidation number in H₂ and
oxygen's oxidation number in O₂ is 0. This is
because both hydrogen and oxygen are in their
elemental state (i.e. diatomic molecules in the gas
phase). The hydrogen in water, however has am
oxidation number of +1 and oxygen has an
oxidation number of -2. The whole molecule should
equal 0 which it does. (2 hydrogen's each with a +1
and then 1 oxygen with a -2, sum = 0).
For the reaction 2H2 + O2 --> 2H₂O
Since the oxidation numbers are changing during
the reaction, the reaction is classified as a redox
reaction.](/v2/_next/image?url=https%3A%2F%2Fcontent.bartleby.com%2Fqna-images%2Fquestion%2F1a4e871a-8fec-4576-9857-bad47ff2f40a%2F96e0626e-13ac-4a77-aa55-28f89df75b68%2Fpp71bu_processed.jpeg&w=3840&q=75)
