Compassionate release is a procedure that allows some qualifying, extremely ill inmates to die outside of jail before their sentences are completed. It was made a federal statute in 1984 and is now used by the vast majority of U.S. prisons. Many policy experts are asking for greater use of compassionate release due to an aging jail population, overcrowding, growing deaths in imprisonment, and soaring criminal justice medical expenditures.
