Area opaca can be defined as the opaque area which surrounds the area pellucida of a embryo of a bird or any vertebrate and it is formed by discoidal cleavage.

Main difference between the area pellucida and area opaca is the shedding of deep cells.Deep cells of area pellucida are shed and area opaca retains the deep cells.
