Illustrate, using a negative feedback pathway, the regulation of hormones of the thyroid gland. Using this illustration, explain (in words) how the negative feedback pathway works.
The production and release of the thyroid hormones , thyroxine and triiodothyronine , is controlled by a feedback loop system , which involves the hypothalamus , the anterior pituitary gland and the thyroid. The hypothalamus secreted a hormone called thyroid thyrotropin releasing hormone , which inturn stimulates the pituitary gland to produce thyroid stimulating hormone . The Thyroid stimulating hormone ( TSH) then stimulates the production of the thyroid hormones , thyroxine and triiodothyronine , by the thyroid gland . TSH binds on the TSH receptors located on the thyroid cells . Thyroid receptors is a member of G protein coupled receptors superfamily and it basically means that it is integrated in the cell membrane of the thyroid and stimulate the intracellular activity.
