Illustrate different types of lipids and relate their chemical structures to their role in the biochemical systems.
Lipids are important to our body as they store energy, as well as are required for cellular structure.
Lipids can be defined as an organic substance that is moderately insoluble in water but soluble in
organic solvents like ether, alcohol, etc.
Lipids are actually or potentially related to fatty acids.
An important function of lipids:-
1) Fuel reservoir of the body (triacylglycerol).
2) They are major components of cell structure and they play important role in maintaining a cell's
permeability.
3) They are an important source of fat-soluble vitamins.
4) They protect our internal organs by serving as insulating materials.
5) They are required for giving shape and a smooth appearance to our body.
6) They participate in the electron transport chain.
