The part of the digestive system that mainly helps in the water absorption from the food that is indigestible in the small intestine. It will also absorb vitamins and form feces, which will lead to the rectum for the elimination process. The diameter of the large intestine is more than the small intestine.
In the large intestine structure, the intraperitoneal organs are the transverse colon, sigmoid colon, cecum, and appendix. In contrast, the retroperitoneal organs are the ascending colon, descending colon, and rectum. Any layer of the peritoneum does not completely cover the organs of the retroperitoneal. The covering of the peritoneum completely protects the intraperitoneal organs. The intraperitoneal organs of the large intestine covered more area as compared to retroperitoneal organs.
