Question

Identify the major symptoms of localized inflammation and of
septic shock.

Expert Solution
Step 1

Septic shock is a serious condition in which the blood pressure reduces to extremely low levels due to the immunological response to an infection. Mostly bacterial infections lead to septic shock, however some viruses and fungi like Candida can also cause septic shock. Infants, pregnant women, elderly people, individuals with underlying medical conditions like diabetes, kidney problem, cirrhosis, and those receiving chemotherapy are at a greater risk of developing septic shock after infection.

Step 2

The symptoms of septic shock are given below.

  1. Hypotension (low blood pressure)
  2. Chills, weakness, rapid breathing, and heart rate.
  3. Disorientation and confusion.
  4. Vomiting, nausea, and diarrhea.
  5. Clammy, cold, and pale-colored skin.
  6. If not treated properly, the toxins produced by bacterial cells can disrupt the small blood capillaries leading to the leakage of plasma fluid into the tissue. This condition leads to edema.
  7. In complicated cases, kidney failure, abnormal blood clotting, heart failure, and respiratory failure can occur.
