Question

Identify the location of both multiunit smooth muscle and single-unit smooth muscle, and explain the difference in how each is regulated.

Expert Solution
Step 1

Smooth muscles as the name suggests, are smooth in appearance i.e. they do not have striations on them.

There are multiple organs and places where these muscles are found in our body starting from the iris of eye to the digestive system walls.

Smooth muscles are involuntary in nature.

There are further two subtypes of smooth muscles:

1) Multi-unit smooth muscles

2) Single- unit smooth muscles

Step 2

Single-unit smooth muscles-

1) They are more common type.

2) In single-unit smooth muscles the muscle fibres are joined end to end via gap junctions, so as to make it a single unit. So, whenever muscle contract, it contracts as a single unit.

3) These types of muscles are present in Visceral organs except Heart.

Example- lungs, digestive system , excretory system etc.
