Identify the anatomic structures and describe the functional
areas of the cerebrum
Expert Solution
Step 1
The brain and spinal cord together will make or compose the central nervous system. The brain is divided into three functional parts- cerebrum, cerebellum, and medulla oblongata.
Step 2
- The cerebrum is the largest part located in the front part of the brain. It can also be known as the forebrain. It is derived from the telencephalon is divided into left and right hemispheres.
- Corpus callosum divides these hemispheres and helps in transmitting information between the right and left brain.
- Meninges are the brain's protective layers, made of 3 layers - outer dura mater, middle arachnoid layer, and inner pia mater.
- The surface of the cerebrum is having grooves- gyrus and ridges- sulcus. These grooves and ridges help reduce the surface area of the brain and make it fit in a smaller cranium.
- The cerebrum has 5 lobes, namely, Frontal, Parietal, Temporal, Occipital, and Insular. These lobes are the functional areas of the cerebrum.
- The frontal lobe control motor actions.
- The Parietal lobe control sensory actions.
- The temporal lobe control auditory actions.
- The Occipital lobe control visual actions.
- The insular lobe control homeostatic actions.
