ACCESSORY STRUCTURES OF THE SKIN : accessory structures of the skin include the hair , nails , sweat glands and sebaceous glands . These structures originate from the epidermis and are called as " appendages " . They extend down through the dermis into the hypodermis .
HAIR - it is the keratin structure growing out of the epidermis . It is found on all areas of the body except the palms of the hand , soles of the feet and the lips .Its function includes protection from the sun and dust particles , thermoregulation sensory reception and distribution of sweat gland products .
NAILS - it consists of hardened and densely packed keratin and also it protects the extremities of our fingers and toes from mechanical damage . They also facilitate grasping and tactile sensitivity in the finger .
