Acid-base balance Maintenance- Accumulation of carbon dioxide can result in acidosis and pH declines. The respiratory system functions to maintain the blood pH by removing carbon dioxide from the blood.
Defense- The respiratory system functions to protect the body from dust and pathogens. The nasal cavity filters the air, preventing dust and spores from entering the body via a respiratory pathway. The macrophages present in the alveoli of the lungs also help to fight and eliminate pathogens.
Olfaction- Respiratory organs like the nose help in providing the sense of smell or olfaction.
Sound production- The respiratory organs like the larynx also assist in the production of sound.
Blood filtration- The respiratory organs called the lungs also function in the filtration and storage of the blood for systemic circulation.
