Stannous chloride solution, SnCl2 (aq), is used as a
reducing agent in analytical chemistry. It is susceptible to
oxidation of the stannous ion, Sn²+, to the stannic ion,
Sn+, by oxygen in air. Thus, the solution must be used
immediately or stabilized to extend shelf life.
Oxidation of iron(III) by titration with stannous chloride
Iron ore samples are pretreated by dissolving the sample in acid, then reducing the Fe3+ to Fe²+ with
stannous chloride. The excess reducing agent is then oxidized by treatment with HgCl, before the
sample is titrated with a standard solution of an oxidizing agent.
