![PROCEDURE
Triethylene Glycol to Ditosylate Glycol (1)
1. IN A FUMEHOOD, add 5 mL of pyridine to a large test tube. Dissolve 0.55 mL
(4.03 mmol) of triethylene glycol and 0.75 g (5.22 mmol) p-toluenesulfonyl
chloride in the pyridine and stir the solution for 20 minutes at room
temperature.
2. Add second equivalent of 0.75 g (5.22mmol) p-toluenesulfonyl and the stir
solution in warm water bath (approx. 40°C) for 1 hour and 30 minutes.
3. Remove the test tube from water bath, add 5 mL of 6 M hydrochloric acid. Place
the test tube in an ice water bath and continue to stir the reaction until solid
precipitates. Collect the precipitate with vacuum filtration. Allow the solid to dry
on watch glass until next lab period, then collect the mass of the solid for percent
yield.](/v2/_next/image?url=https%3A%2F%2Fcontent.bartleby.com%2Fqna-images%2Fquestion%2F0cf4d3c7-c052-40bc-ae61-8c1d80a56ff3%2F7598e7d4-ad35-40c9-ad17-891773899542%2Fl69g5vm_processed.png&w=3840&q=75)
