Aspartate-4-P
aspartate
semialdehyde
dihydrodipicolinate
homoserine
O-succinylhomoserine
homoserine-P
L-threonine
a-oxobutyrate
L-Lysine
L-methionine
L-isoleucine
Members of the aspartate family of amino acids
(lysine, methionine, threonine, and isoleucine) are produced by
the branched pathway shown above.
Each end product inhibits and/or represses the first enzyme of the
common pathway, aspartate kinase (shown as three arrows).
However, so that one product does not shut down all of the kinase
activity, three different isozymes (different enzymes that catalyze the
same chemical reaction) of aspartate kinase are present: one
sensitive to lysine inhibition, one sensitive to threonine inhibition, and
one repressed mainly by excess methionine.
In addition to inhibition of the first enzyme of the common pathway,
briefly explain why it makes sense that the end-products of each
branch would also negatively regulate the first step in the branches
specific to their own production (as shown circled in red).
