LABORATORY ACTIVITY ANGIOSPERMS-MONOCOTS: ALISMATALES, ASPARAGALES, LILIALES, ARECALES AND POALES I. OBJECTIVES After the activity, the student should be able to, i) describe the monocots, i) enumerate the orders comprising the monocots and ii) mention the economic importance of several monocots II. MATERIALS Live or herbarium specimen of monocots: Alismatales, Asparagales, iliales, Arecales and Poales; reproductive structures of any representative species for each group, any reference materials for angiosperms monocots, internet, newspapers, pencil, oslo paper, erasers, coloring materials III. INTRODUCTION The monocots are characterized as having parallel veins, scattered vascular bundles, and a single cotyledon. Alismatales, Asparagales, Liliales, Arecales and Poales are important orders. Many are food and oil sources and some are ornamentals. The order Poales includes the families Cyperaceae, Eriocaulaceae, Juncaceae, Poaceae, Restoniaceae, Sparganiaceae, Typhaceae and Xyridaceae. The world's staples (rice, corn, wheat, etc.) belong to this order. However, most of the representatives are considered weeds because they are associated farms and are very prolific. They colonize all types of habitats, from terrestrial to semi-terrestrial and are also very diversified. Some of them are noxious to agricultural crops. IV. ACTIVITY 1. Illustrate the plant habit/reproductive structures of representative species for each of the order under the angiosperms monocots. Label your drawings properly. Give also the taxonomical hierarchy of classification of the plant. A. Representative species of Alismatales B. Representative species of Asparagales C. Representative species of Liliales D. Representative species of Arecales E. Representative species of Poales 2. Describe the different orders under the monocots in terms of plant habit, reproductive type (monoecius/dioecius), leaf type, leaf shape, floral characteristics, fruit morphology, seed size/shape, and other distinct features V. ENRICHMENTS 1. Identify the economic uses of at least 3 species in each order under the monocots. 2. Discuss the importance of several species of monocots in relation to the existence of human race. Do you think they are vital to our survival? IV. CONCLUSIONS
