Question

I am trying to write a C program to find the percentage of marks obtained when the user enters marks scored, but the output is always coming 0.000 Please help me by telling what is the error in my code.

Code:

#include <stdio.h>

int main()
{
int totalMarks = 500;
int marksScored;
scanf("%d",&marksScored);
float percent = (marksScored*100)/totalMarks;
printf("Percent = %.2f",percent);
return 0;
}

Expert Solution
Solution:

Given Code:

#include <stdio.h>

int main()
{
int totalMarks = 500;
int marksScored;
scanf("%d",&marksScored);
float percent = (marksScored*100)/totalMarks;
printf("Percent = %.2f",percent);
return 0;
}

Error:

The output is not coming 0 in your code but the error is that it is giving wrong answer in many cases. For example if marks scored is 473 then output is coming 94% instead of 94.6%.

This error is coming because of the line:  float percent = (marksScored*100)/totalMarks ;

When marksScored*100 and totalMarks are divided then they both are integers and their division will also be an integer and not a float value. The result is rounded off to the nearest integer. Therefore, to get the correct result we have to typecast any one value to float explicitly.

Correct Code is given below.
