Expert Solution
Step 1

Similar sounding words, adopt and adapt can be confused with each other, however, their meanings are not the same. To adopt would be to take something and make it one's own or to inculcate it in their life, whereas to adapt is to make changes to one's behaviour (or form) to fit into a new environment/lifestyle. So, for instance, a child is adopted into a new family whereas the child will have to adapt to the new family's environment.

This can also be applied to human behaviour. In fact, an attempt to understand the difference between adapting and adopting is also a good way to acknowledge, understand and appreciate the fluidity of human behaviour. Charles Darwin said, "It is not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent but the one's who are most responsive to change". Here, Darwin is clearly indicating the importance of adaptation in the face of change. If living things stop adapting to change, they will find themselves in distress and struggle to survive.
