Question

How would you draw a structure like (+-)hexane-3,4-diol

What about (+)hexane-3,4-diol or (-)hexane-3,4-diol? Would it be impossible to draw these two because + and - separately are determined via polarimetry and not spatial arrangement?

Expert Solution
Step 1

+ and - are symbols to show dextrorotatory and laevorotatory compounds, one rotate plane polarised light to right and other rotate it to left. Both are non superimposable mirror images to each other. Thus they are called enantiomers.
