Expert Solution
Step 1

Psychology in its most basic sense can be described as the scientific study of mind and behavior. Psychology understands how our brain processes information, how our thoughts affect our emotions, how learning can be influential in changing behavior and etcetera.

Understanding the mind and behavior can help prevent, treat and diagnose mental health conditions. Psychology helps us understand what kind of behavior is normal and what behavior is maladaptive.

We all as individuals would have experienced trauma in some way or the other; experiencing a divorce of parents as a child, bullying in school, being a victim of mental or sexual abuse, being parented by an alcoholic parent who barely paid heed to the child's needs, and etcetera cause us to learn to cope with our feelings.

These coping mechanisms may not be the healthiest. A person may learn to cope with their negative emotions and feelings of loneliness and worthlessness by relying on food, alcohol, and smoking or drinking as a way to alleviate their feelings. However, these behaviors are not the healthiest and psychology helps us identify why these behaviors are maladaptive and how they can deteriorate one's mental health condition.
