To determine which solution has greater number of ions, we need to find the number of ions that dissociate per solution.

This can be done as :

The number of ions in a compound depends on the structure of the compound and the oxidation states of the elements within the compound. This determines the ionic charge of that element.

Then, identify the polyatomic ions in the compound. Polyatomic ions are ionic molecules made up of more than one atom (often of more than one element). Separate the cations and anions. Cations are ions with a positive charge; anions are ions with a negative charge. 

 

NOTE : Solution of only ionic compound will give ions whereas solutions of covalent compounds will not produce any ions.

 

The general formula for dissociation of solutions of ionic compounds can be written as :

AxBy → x Ay+ + y Bx-      

Where A and B can be mono or polyatomic ions.
