Many of the civil engineering projects are dependent on the drainage pattern and the magnitude of the drainage in the region. These include dams, reservoirs, irrigation canals, river training works, bridge construction, water treatment, sewerage systems, and any others.
All these projects have to know the amount of rainfall occurring in the concerned are to know the design forces, time, dimensions, etc that have to be included in the project design.
For example, in case of dams construction, the amount of rainfall occurring and the amount of water reaching the drainage will affect the height and size of dam. If the river is probable to higher flood levels higher design load will be considered for the design of dam profile.
