Transcribed Image Text:The Case of Fiona A.
Our first case is the case of Fiona A. Fiona suffered a mild stroke at the age of 36.
While her cognitive abilities remained intact, she did suffer from one lingering
consequence-her voice changed. Prior to her TBI, Fiona spoke with an easy,
smooth, high-pitched, Southern American accent. Following stroke recovery, the
tone of her voice was drastically altered. While she was still speaking regular
English, her friends described her as sounding nearly German. Her tone was deep
and raspier than it previously was. While this condition is quite rare, numerous
cases have been documented and we'll use this case to help us understand some of
brain regions we'll encounter shortly.
To help us better understand Fiona's case and the occurrence of other TBIS, we first
need a full understanding of the brain itself. Ultimately, our brain controls
everything we think, do, and feel. These functions are widely distributed
throughout the brain and many regions contribute to any single given task or
behavior. For example, there are many areas involved in language that might help
explain Fiona's disorder. We'll encounter just a few of them in this learning activity.
