How many stereocenter(s) does Ibuprofen have ? What is/are the R or S configuration of the stereocenter(s) ?

How many diastereomer(s) does Ibuprofen have? If none, explain why?

Expert Solution
Introduction-

Stereocenter is the point in a molecule with different substituents such that altering any 2 substituents results in stereoisomers.

The R and S configuration are used to describe the enantiomers. R means 'rectus' configuration S means 'sinister' configuration. Here R can be determined by right handedness or clockwise represented molecules and S can be determined by left handedness or anticlockwise represented molecules as the above diagram. Clockwise or anticlockwise numbering for molecules are given by Cann-Ingold-Prelogs (CIP) rules. According to CIP rules we can determine the configuration. CIP rules are as follows-

  1. Atom having highest atomic number will get the first priority.
  2. When we compare isotopes, we must consider highest mass number isotope.
  3. If there is a tie between the above two rules, then we must consider the chain i.e., triple bond>double bond>single bond.

Diastereomers are those isomers with more than 2 stereocenters. They are non-superimposable non-mirror images of the molecule.
