Question

How many moles of a gas are present if, when the gas is collected over water at 24 oC, it has a total pressure of 755 Torr and a volume of 3.5 L?  The vapor pressure of water at this temperature is 25 Torr. Determine the partial pressure of the gas first.

Expert Solution
Step 1

According to Dalton's law, the total pressure of gaseous mixture is equal to the sum of partial pressure of each gas present in the mixture

Since the given mixture will have water vapour and gas

Hence total pressure = partial pressure of gas + vapour pressure of water

=> 755 = partial pressure of gas + 25

partial pressure of gas = 730 torr = 730 / 760 = 0.96 atm                                       ( since 1 atm = 760 torr)
