Expert Solution
Step 1
  • Energy level:- These are the levels where electrons can be found and these lies at specific distance from the nucleus of an atom.
  • Energy levels in an atom can be upto inifinite in number.
  • As energy levels are increasing, the energy of electrons goes on increasing as there distance from the nucleus is increasing.
  • d-orbitals:- These orbitals have shape of like four leaf clover with an exception for dz2, which has donut shape with a lobe above and below.
  • Angular quantum number(l), if equal to 2, then it corresponds to d-orbital.
  • The magnetic quantum number(ml) for d- orbital is 5 and ml is taken from -l to +l that is from -2 to +2. Therefore, 5 d-orbitals arises from ml values which are dxy, dyz, dzx, dx2-y2  and dz2.
  • d- orbitals (dxy, dyz, dzx, dx2-y2  and dz2) exists from 3rd energy level and onwards.
