An operational amplifier is a high gain direct coupled amplifier. It incorporates feedback to control its characteristics. Op-amps are used for performing a wide range of linear functions and also some non-linear functions or operations and are referred to as analog integrated circuits. Operations like addition, subtraction, differentiation, integration can be performed using op-amp, hence the name operational and since it amplifies the input signal, the name amplifier arises.
