Observational learning refers to a process of learning in which individuals learn by watching the behaviors of others. The behavior that is supposed to learn is observed, memorized, and then imitated. This process of learning is also known as shaping and modeling. There are four processes involved in observational learning. The processes are as follows:
• Attention: In this process, the observer needs to pay attention to the model in the environment and notice the behavior that is occurring.
• Retention: Just attention or noticing the behavior is not enough to learn the behavior. In the next stage, the observer must remember the behavior to be used at a later time. The behavior must be encoded in their memory to retrieve at a later stage.
• Reproduction: In this process, the observer should be able to physically reproduce or perform memorized behavior. The behavior sometimes needs a lot of practice to be perfected.
• Motivation: For the observer to learn and reproduce a behavior, they need to be motivated for the same. This means that the behavior should be reinforcing to them somehow.
