Nmap stands for Network Mapper it is a free open source for vulnerability scanning and a network discovery. This nmap is used by the network administrators to know the details of devices that are running on their systems. Nmap is used for multipurpose that is it can be used to monitor a single host or can moniter large number of other devices.
The main functionality of the nmap is it find which is open and which port is connected when a scanning is done it show all the details that are related that host the sample image is given in the step2 please go through it to get a better understanding.
There are different protocols present and they all use different types of data packets, so it scans to identify which protocol is being used the protocols like TCP(Transmission Control Protocol), SCTP(Stream Control Transmission Protocol etc, are present in the transport layer.
