Question

How is the positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) caused?

Expert Solution
Introduction

Positive end expiratory pressure:-
Positive end expiratory pressure or PEEP is the pressure above atmospheric pressure that is created in the lungs at the end of the process of expiration.

There are 2 types of PEEP, which are the following:-

  1. Intrinsic PEEP: This is Auto-PEEP
  2. Extrinsic PEEP: This is applied PEEP.
Explanation:

Causes of PEEP are the following:-

  1. Hyperinflation'- It is known as trapping of air in lungs.
  2. Hyperventilation- It is known as increase in the breathing rate.
  3. Obstructed Airway-It is the obstruction of airway either due to disease condition or trapping of food that leads to obstruction of passage of air to lungs.
  4. Expiratory resistance- It is the resistance of air flow to lungs during expiration.
  5. Ventilator-associated lung injury- excessive dependence on ventilators may lead to lung injury which in turn can lead to PEEP.
  6. Acute respiratory distress syndrome- ARDS is associated with collection of fluid in lungs and shortness of breath.
  7. Respiratory failure- This condition leads to lung damage which in turn leads to ineffective respiration, ventilator support and PEEP.
