How is the photoelectric effect verified experimentally?

Expert Solution
Step 1

The photoelectric effect is a phenomenon in which, when light of suitable frequency is incident on a metal surface, the electrons are ejected from the surface(these electrons are called photoelectrons).

Aim: To study the emission of electrons by light from the metal surface.

Apparatus:

Principle : The vacuum chamber has a small quartz window, the main function of quartz  window is to make sure that light of specific frequency(UV light) is incident on the metal surface.

When light with specific frequency is incident on the metal surface(plate 1), the electrons are ejected from the metal surface. These electrons are then collected by the detector(plate 2) which is placed on the other side of the vacuum tube. These two plates are connected to the battery. An ammeter is present in the circuit to detect the presence of current.
