How is the female
gametophyte formed in
angiosperms?

Expert Solution
Step 1

Angiosperms are the plants producing flowers and bear their seeds in fruits. These belong to kingdom plantae. These are the vascular plant consisting of roots, stems and leaves. Seeds of angiosperms are developed in the ovaries of flower which is protected by fruit. These are the ultimate source of food for birds, mammals and also human beings. These are the green plants which serve as a source for pharmaceuticals, fiber products, ornaments, timber etc.

Step 2

The reproductive organ of angiosperms is flower. It consist of male and female reproductive organs. The male reproductive organ is known as androecium and female reproductive organ is gynoecium.

The gynoecium consists of stigma, style and ovary. The ovary of flower consist of megasporangium which is enclosed by a tegument having a small opening known as the micropyle. Megasporocyte, or megaspore mother cell are present within this megasporangium . Ovaries containing these  megaspore mother cells are diploid in nature. They undergo meiosis and form four haploid megaspores. Out of these four cells, three degenerate and only one lives upto their maturity.
Embrosac is formed by the one active cell. As this cell undergoes mitosis and forms two, four, eight nucleated embrosac. This is haploid in nature and that represents the female gametophyte.
