How has the concept of secularization influenced the study of the sociology of religion?

Expert Solution
Introduction

In sociology, the mechanism by which society transitions away from a religious structure or basis is referred to as secularization. For example, as the colonization of the United States began, many of the colonizers had strong moral convictions that influenced their actions. They acted as the structural structure of their culture. However, as the civilization advanced, the advances in science and technology and growing diversity among the people meant that a common religion was no longer sufficient as a basis. With time, religion was supplemented by other socio-cultural frameworks.

Americans have debated vigorously about the position of religion in society for quite some time now. References to God or lectures on the Bible in public schools, for example, have become a severe point of controversy between religious groups and the broader community, primarily because of the importance that most Americans put on the distinction between church and state. It is a significant point because the United States is a democratic society, meaning that the societal system is not based on any single religion or related to it.
