Question

How does the texture of phyllite differ from that of schist?

Expert Solution
Step 1

Phyllite is developed by the metamorphism of slate. It is well foliated, but it differs from the slate, the layers are not fully flat but have a faintly wavy pattern. Phylite has a faintly glazy looking due to the development of any mica plates aligned parallel to the foliation. Phyllite is generated by comparatively low-grade metamorphism in the base of the greenschist facies.

Schist is metamorphosed phyllite. Crystals of mica in this rock are longer than mica crystals in phyllite. Schists may also with dominating talc, kyanite, pyrophyllite, chlorite, or sillimanite. Schist is a medium graded metamorphic rock.
