Earthquakes are a physical phenomenon that results in a violent shaking of the Earth. Earthquakes are generally formed due to a sudden release in energy caused by brittle deformation (failure) of the Earth's crust. The energy released travels in the form of vibrations that travel through the Earth and along the surface. Every year is earthquakes cause billions of dollars of infrastructural damages and loss of lives. For this reason, it is essential to predict the occurrence of earthquakes and prepare accordingly.

In the study of earthquakes, it is essential to measure the earthquakes and classify them with respect to their physical properties. For measuring earthquakes, there are many measurement scales used; of them, the Richter scale is one of the most popular methods of measuring earthquakes.
The Richter scale classifies earthquakes based on their magnitude by measuring the amount of energy released during an earthquake. Unlike most other scales, the magnitude of an Earthquake is constant for a particular earthquake regardless of the distance from the epicenter. Therefore every earthquake has a single Richter scale value and can be used to measure an earthquake's size. In this way, using the Richter scale data, one can delineate locations that have frequent high magnitude earthquakes and manage constructions of infrastructure in such locations accordingly. For this reason, the Richter scale remains of utmost importance even today.
