- How does the equilibrium constant depend on temperature?
Since a reaction can be two types.
1) Endothermic reaction : reactions which absorbs heat from surroundings
2) Exothermic reaction : reactions which releases heat to surroundings
The equilibrium constant of any reaction is proportional to the product concentrations and inversely proportional to the reactant concentrations.
According to LeChatelier's principle, a reaction shifts in the endothermic direction on increasing the temperature of reaction.
1) In case of exothermic reaction, the reaction will shift in backward direction, that is reactant side on increasing the temperature.
Hence the concentration of reactants will increase and products will decrease.
Hence the equilibrium constant of reaction will decrease on increasing the temperature of the reaction.
2) In case of endothermic reaction, the reaction will shift in forward direction, that is product side on increasing the temperature.
Hence the concentration of reactants will decrease and products will increase.
Hence the equilibrium constant of reaction will increase on increasing the temperature of the reaction.
