HOW DOES THE DIAGNOSIS OF ADHD RELATE TO DEPRESSION
ADHD –Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, it is the most common neuro behavioral problem in children mainly affecting the school going children.
The most common features of ADHD are- inattention, including excess distractibility, lack of concentration, poor control on impulse, motor restlessness and over activity.
According to DSM-IV the diagnosis depends upon the symptoms which should be present consistently for more than 6 months and affecting the daily activities like academic, social, or occupational.
Severity of the disorder are –
MILD- when symptoms are present according to diagnosis criteria but not affect much, he routine of the child is categorized as MILD.
MODERATE- symptoms are between the mild and severe are categorized in moderate disorder.
SEVERE- As per the diagnosis criteria, symptoms are present and affecting the daily routine of the child are severe category.
Cause –
- there is not a single cause, maternal causes like toxemia during antenatal period, prolonged labor, alcohol use, lead exposure.
- Genetic load.
- Severe brain injury
- Some structural and functional changes in brain
- Psychosocial stress
Treatment-
- Identify the behavior of the child and work on that particular problem.
- If behavior modification is there, so reward should be given to child a motivation.
- Medication can be given to the children like pre synaptic dopamine agonist, Known as Psychostimulant, amphetamines etc.
