How does the Cone penetrometers is used?
- Cone penetrometer test is a type of on field or in situ test used to determine geotechnical properties and stratification of underground soil.
- Cone penetrometer is used for soil investigation of sandy soil, sensitive soil, clayey soil but this test is not suitable to used for gravelly soil.
- The procedure to use cone penetrometer involves following steps :
1- In cone penetrometer test, A test rod with cone at one end having apex angle of is pushed into the ground using a hydraulic machine at constant rate of penetration.
2- The rate of penetration is kept constant in the range of 1.5 cm/sec to 2.5 cm/sec.
3- Measurement is taken continuously for the resistance against penetration offered by cone and surface sleeve of test rod.
4- The result obtained from test are analysed to determine various properties of soil,
a- Soil type
b- Stiffness or shear strength of soil
