How does social media influence societal attitudes towards health and attractiveness? What can we as individuals or a society do to make social media a positive influence on healthy and attractiveness?
That social media has given society both positive and negatives have been established. Most of us spend a major chunk of our day on social the plethora of social media that are now available for us and our perception and attitude is constantly getting influenced by it to an extent where individuals (also known as influencers) are now getting paid to influence us about products. Society has found itself in a position where even though individuals have slowly started to recuse themselves from social media, it isn't the easiest thing to do.
The following are ways in which social media influences social attitudes towards health and attractiveness -
- The images that are posted on social media are often heavily photoshopped or "filtered". Even if they are not, the idea of how an individual should look is constantly reinforced. The certain section still continues to propagate the idea of the perfect body. Witnessing this can prove to be harmful as individuals continue to believe that till they achieve that body type, they won't be perfect and happy. Needless to say, this gives rise to unhealthy lifestyle habits and can propagate eating disorders as well.
- The type of clothing one wears on social media also has an impact on the choices that individuals make with respect to their own clothing and appearance to fit in and look more attractive.
- It would be negligent to say that social media is only propagating a certain body type given that there are a lot of body positivity influencers who encourage individuals to love themselves the way they are. This has also made people accept themselves and love themselves the way they are while simultaneously working on themselves if need be.
- At the peak of the pandemic, as people focused more on their fitness, they also started posting a lot of fitness videos. This would have had two effects - either people changed their attitude towards their sedentary lifestyle and were motivated to exercise or they were disappointed with how much they were not doing i.e lack of productivity when compared to the others which eventually sent them down a spiral.
