Expert Solution
Introduction

The theory of plate tectonics has evolved from Harry Hess's concept of seafloor spreading. The entire earth's surface is composed of several rigid and thin plates. These plates are between 100 and 150km thick and carry both continental and oceanic crust with them. They are continuously in motion with each other. There are seven largest plates on the earth's surface -

  • North American plate
  • South American plate
  • Eurasian plate
  • African plate
  • Indo-Australian plate
  • Pacific plate
  • Antarctic plate

Pacific Plate is the enormous plate on the earth's surface.
