How does channel richness help in choosing a method of communication. Will using the accurate method of communication enhance motivation?
Communication is the process by which a sender conveys a message or information to a receiver. The message is transmitted over a channel or medium. The medium chosen for a particular type of communication depends on several parameters. The most important of these parameters is the richness of the channel. It refers to the quantum of information that can be transmitted and the quality of such information.
The quantum of information also refers to the strength of the message in terms of how easily it can be transmitted through verbal and non-verbal cues. For example, a live face-to-face interaction can enhance the content of the message through non-verbal cues such as tone of voice, gestures, and body posture. Thus, verbal interaction is rich because it carries the message with context and aids in understanding it better. Non-verbal communication is less rich because it has the risk of missing the dimension of context in which the sender intended the message to be understood. Letters, e-mails, tweets, press releases, and such other communication documents may suffer from inefficiency of language use, inaccurate information, poor phrasing of the content, grammatical errors, and so on. All these defects may influence the understanding and cause confusion or sometimes annoyance.
Therefore, channel richness is essential to choosing the appropriate method of communication. Even within the overall arc of formal versus nonformal communication, verbal communication is always preferable as the first choice. Emails are richer than plain letters or press releases.
