Immunity is defined as the capacity of an organism to resist the attack of foreign pathogens. It is a complex biological system involving the identification of self and non-self cells. Immunity can be adaptive or innate.

Innate immunity is the first line of defence and provides an immediate response to foreign bodies since they are present from the time of birth. Acquired immunity is the type of immunity that one gains during their lifetime. It can be acquired through vaccination or by exposure to disease.

Cells of innate immunity include macrophages, neutrophils, mast cells, natural killer cells and cells of adaptive immunity are lymphocytes namely, B cells and T cells.
