The outer ear called the pinnae.It is funnel shaped. The folds and curves of the pinnae enhance sounds up to 100 times and leave other pitches intact reducing background noises and resolving the direction of the sound. Sounds traveling from the front and sides are enhanced by the pinnae so that they can reach clearly on to the middle ear. Ear trumpets and cupped pinnae improve hearing when the wide parts or cups were pointed to the sound source but reduce hearing when they pointed elsewhere.
