Question

How do I find the number of classes in a frequency histogram.

Expert Solution
Step 1

Frequency histogram:

Histogram is one graph which indicates the shape of the distribution of the dataset among many other types of graphs. Histograms display the visualization of quantitative data using the vertical bars. In histogram Y-axis represents the frequencies of the data points and the X-axis represents the range of the data points.

Step 2

Determine the number of classes.

When a histogram is given:

Answers may vary; one of the possible answers is given below:

In a frequency histogram, the height of the bars represents the number of data points that lie within the class interval corresponding to the X-axis. The ranges of intervals on the X-axis are called classes or bins.

The number of vertical bars in the histogram is the number of classes of that particular histogram. Sometimes, if there was only one class then all the data falls into that class. The other possibility is having multitude of classes, in this case none of the bars will be probably tall.  This is not a statistical principle.

When a dataset is given:

When a dataset is given, 2k rule is used to find the number of classes to construct a histogram.

The smallest possible value of k satisfying the requirement 2k >= n is the number of classes for the dataset.

Here, k is the number of classes and n is the number of data points in the dataset.
