  • How can the government, agencies, and people do better in the future? highlight the insights and learning

Before proceeding with the detailed answer, let us first have a brief discussion about the history of disease outbreaks around the world. Throughout human history, there have been several diseases or epidemics that had a greater impact, such as the Asian flu, cholera, smallpox, and so on, similar to the current pandemic. These diseases have always spread in the same way, namely through animal breeding or trade. As a result of being in contact with the sources, these diseases have spread throughout history. However, as time passed and science and technology advanced, people were cured, and preventive measures were implemented. The pandemic had caused chaos as well as changes in the lives of people not only in the Philippines, but all over the world. However, a few events occurred in the Philippines to draw attention to the pandemic COVID -19 or SARS-CoV 2. This pandemic will not allow the world to return to its "old normal" state prior to 2020. As stated in the referenced source, there is a mention of a fact that is entirely true in every way: the lack of a proper healthcare system. Even though the World Health Organization (WHO) Commission announced three to four years ago that there might be an increase in the number of diseases or the occurrence of a pandemic due to 'globalization' and pathogens and genomes, no one paid much attention to it or began preparing for it in advance. The fact that humans forget things easily and quickly, and that the future time period was unknown, was another major reason why the healthcare system and Filipinos suffered more than other countries during this pandemic. Neither the government nor the health institutions took any preventive measures to fight the upcoming (the ongoing pandemic) war either. Travel bans or protocols that are strictly enforced everywhere today should have been implemented from the start, when news of COVID -19 in Wuhan, China, in December 2019 reached the world. As a result, a popular saying goes, "prevention is always better than cure."

Following the pandemic, the most important lesson for everyone was that maintaining good health is the key to a disease-free life and hygiene. We all know that immunity played an important role in this COVID-19 virus, as few people showed minor symptoms while others, sadly, died. Now, the virus was the same, but the body's abilities were different, as people who maintained good health and had good immunity showed less symptoms or were not affected at all. So, yes, maintaining good health, such as avoiding heart disease and high blood sugar, became a must for living a disease-free life, and people became more aware of this.

The second factor was hygiene. Because the COVID-19 virus was easily transmitted, people kept their hands clean, their surfaces clean, used their hands frequently, washed, and so on, which improved overall hygiene and health. Many things could have been done better, and the mortality rate would have been lower if we had taken the disease seriously from the start. It took months for them to realize how deadly this disease could be. Our government handled the situation badly. It was inefficient to track the COVID-19 patients and people who traveled to other parts. There were numerous flaws in the government procedure, making it impossible to halt the virus's spread. People did not take safety precautions seriously back then. As a result, there were flaws and ignorance everywhere. That's why it took so long and so much effort to put an end to the disease. However, new variants are on the way, and all we can do is stay safe and follow the safety guidelines.

The third takeaway from the COVID-19 event is that science and technology have advanced to the point where we now have the technological capability to modify pathogens in ways that threaten human survival. This realization was frightening, and it raised the question of the ethical foundations of scientific and technological advancements. We could have handled the health issue better if the public had been better informed. The transmission of accurate information from a dependable and centralized public information delivery system could have resulted in less chaos and lockdown. A recurring issue in the relationship of science and technology to society has been the channel for disseminating information about scientific discoveries and technological advancements to the general public. One way to improve ourselves is to establish authorized formal and informal channels for disseminating, discussing, and analyzing such information.
