How autonomic nervous system and Psychophysiological disorders relate each other?

Expert Solution
Step 1

The autonomic nervous system is a division that occurs from the peripheral nervous system. ANS is regulated by the brainstem, spinal cord, and organs. The prime responsibility of ANS is fight and flight, in the situation of danger or crisis.

Step 2

The ANS along with the hypothalamus helps in the regulation of B.P., respiration, pulse rate, and arousal of emotions. The ANS also prepares the body for fight and flight response in the situation of emergency.

The changes that occur in the autonomic nervous system directly affect the personality, psychology, and physiology of the person.

  1. Depression and anxiety are closely related to the decreased stimulation of the vagal control of the heart and the respiratory rate, during increased environmental demands.
  2. Diurnal disturbance in the sleep and wake cycle cause agitation and frustration in the person.
  3. Decreased functioning of the ANS causes less production of dopamine that causes depression and improper function of the ANS is also responsible for mental retardation and Parkinson's disease.
  4. The improper functioning of ANS will cause an imbalanced discharge of neurotransmitter dopamine that cause depression or mania.
