Question

How are arterial blood gas values used to categorize an acid–base disorder as acidosis or alkalosis, respiratory or metabolic, compensated or uncompensated?

Expert Solution
Step 1

Maintenance of the pH of the blood is very important for the normal bodily functions as numerous clinical disorders can disrupt the body's acid-base balance. Monitoring of the acid-base balance is done by testing arterial blood gases(ABGs) of the patient which influence the treatment that patients receive.

Step 2

The optimal pH of extracellular fluid is 7.35-7.45 and pH outside this range causes enzyme inactivation and protein denaturation. The respiratory and renal systems are responsible for maintaining the pH of the blood as they are involved in the excretion of toxic wastes.
When acidosis or alkalosis occurs in the body, either via respiratory or renal mechanisms, the antagonistic system tries to rectify the imbalance and  this phenomenon is termed as compensation like when kidneys fail to excrete metabolic acids then breathing is adjusted in order to eliminate more carbon dioxide. pH of blood indicates acidosis or alkalosis.
