When phenols are treated with nitric acid and sulfuric acid, it leads to the nitration of the benzene ring.

As, the '-OH' group is electron donating in nature and due to this, the benzene ring becomes suitable for electrophilic substitution on ortho- and para- positions.

But, due to the present of 'NO2-' group, which is electron withdrawing in nature makes the benzene ring suitable for electrophilic substitution at meta- position. Major product for the nitration in the presence of nitro group is meta, but a lesser amount of ortho product is also formed.
