Cars The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is part of the US Department of Transportation.
It was established by the Highway Safety Act of 1970 and is charged with various aspects of vehicle safety and
standards. In 1975, Congress created the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) program, overseen by the
NHTSA. In recent years, CAFE standards for cars and trucks have been ramping up in an effort to curb greenhouse
gas emissions from vehicles (98% of which come from the CO₂ in exhaust) and reduce US dependence on foreign oil.
NHTSA estimated that the standards implemented for new model would raise the industry-wide combined average
(for cars and light trucks) saving 887 million gallons of fuel and reducing CO₂ emissions by 8.3 million metric tons
over the their lifetime.
In order to analyze miles per gallon (MPG), data has been collected on various characteristics of vehicles
sold in the United States.
Describe and Predict miles per gallon (MPG) using one or more of the available Variables:
Highway MPG: average MPG obtained while driving on highway.
• Displacement (liters): engine displacement (in Liters)
Number of Cylinders: the number of cylinders in the engine
• Weight (pounds): the weight of the car (in pounds)
Horsepower: the horsepower of the vehicle
• Vehicle Type: the type of vehicle (car or truck)
